Artists United Autumn Term 2026
Our courses are crammed full of exciting sessions, fulfilling projects and an opportunity for you explore new techniques, hone and develop existing skills and have a jolly good time doing it too! We very much hope that this will whet your artistic appetite. Previous experience is most definitely not required. All sessions are lead by a very experienced and extremely talented professional tutor. Heather allows everyone to work at their own pace and is always on hand to give everyone the help they need.
Our Autumn term at the Flaxmill is a 12 week course, starting in September and running weekly until November 2026. The fee is £360 (12 sessions at £30). All materials will be provided throughout the entire course, along with free tea, coffee, biscuits and carparking! However we do recommend that you bring along some basic items each week please. A4 sketch pad, 30cm ruler, artist eraser, sketching pencils - HB, 2B & 4B, an A3 carry case to take your work and materials home after each session. If you don't have these items you can purchase a starter pack including all these item from us for £30 upon booking. If you would like to join us please complete the booking form below. Flexible Payment Option The flexible option allows you to spread the cost of the full course fee (£420). A £150 non-refundable deposit is required to secure your place in the class for the full 12-week term. This deposit reserves your space and is not allocated to individual sessions. This would be payable upon receipt of invoice. The remaining balance of £270 is payable in 2 instalments of £135, due by:

COURSE CONTENT
AUTUMN TERM 2026
Explore drawing, painting and mixed media through a rich seasonal journey inspired by nature, observation, illustration and historical art. Each week introduces exciting new techniques, artists and materials designed to build confidence, creativity and technical skills.
Week 1 – Familiar Things, Fresh EyesTheme: Still life studies of everyday objects Media: Pencil Learn how artists transform ordinary objects into extraordinary compositions. Students will explore observation, close-up viewpoints, composition and tonal drawing while developing confidence in sketching from life.
Week 2 – Skull StudiesMedia: Pencil and Pen on tea-stained paper Inspired by: Leonardo da Vinci Discover the fascinating structure of the human form through anatomical drawing. Using dramatic vintage-style backgrounds, students will experiment with detailed line work, shading and observational techniques inspired by Da Vinci’s scientific sketches.
Week 3 – PuffinMedia: Charcoal Experiment with bold charcoal techniques while capturing texture, contrast and character in striking natural subjects. A fantastic introduction to expressive mark-making and tonal studies.
Week 4 – Snowflake GeometryMedia: Coloured Pencil on blue-tinted paper Inspired by: Various Artists Create intricate winter-inspired artworks exploring symmetry, pattern and delicate detail. Students will study the beautiful structure of snowflakes while experimenting with colour layering and precision drawing.
Week 5 – Botanical Illustration: Flower Still LifeMedia: Pen and Tissue Paper Inspired by: Angie Lewin Explore contemporary botanical illustration through bold line work and mixed-media experimentation. Students will create elegant floral studies inspired by the textures and natural beauty of the British landscape.
Week 6 – Snowy LandscapesMedia: Oil Pastels Inspired by: Eric Ravilious Layer soft pastel tones to create atmospheric winter scenes full of mood and depth. Students will explore limited colour palettes and expressive techniques inspired by Ravilious’ beautifully understated landscapes.
Week 7 – Orange Slice Close-UpMedia: Watercolour A vibrant exploration of colour, transparency and detail. Students will paint dramatic close-up studies of citrus fruit while learning watercolour blending and observational painting skills.
Week 8 – Landscapes with TreesMedia: Watercolour Inspired by: Edward Seago Capture the atmosphere of natural landscapes using fluid watercolour techniques, muted palettes and spontaneous brushwork. A relaxing and expressive introduction to landscape painting.
Week 9 – The GreenhouseMedia: Watercolour Inspired by: Eric Ravilious – The Greenhouse: Cyclamen and Tomatoes Students will learn about one-point perspective, delicate colour layering and architectural detail to create beautiful greenhouse-inspired compositions filled with light and atmosphere.
Week 10 – Trees in Red & GreenMedia: Acrylic Paint Inspired by: Félix Vallotton – Five Trees Explore bold colour contrast and vibrant compositions through expressive acrylic painting. Students will investigate complementary colours and simplified forms to create visually striking tree studies.
Week 11 – Crystal ReflectionsTheme: Christmas Baubles Media: Acrylic Paint Inspired by: Various Artists Discover the magic of reflection, shine and contrast through festive-inspired painting projects. Students will learn how to paint highlights, reflections and rich tonal contrasts to create eye-catching compositions.
Week 12 – Medieval Christian Art & IlluminationMedia: Coloured Pencil, Gold Pen and Ink Inspired by: The Lindisfarne Gospels Finish the course with a journey into medieval art and illuminated manuscripts. Students will explore Celtic and Anglo-Saxon design, including knots, scrolls and woven patterns, while creating richly decorative final pieces.

Payment of Fees Course places are limited and are secured upon receipt of payment. We offer a number of booking options depending on what suits you best, including full payment and flexible payment plans. Details of these options are outlined below. For those paying in full, the course fee should be paid prior to the course start date in order to secure your place. For flexible payment options, a deposit is required at the time of booking, with remaining instalments payable as outlined in the booking information. To allow us to meet our contractual obligations with the venue, cover associated costs, and plan effectively, all payments must be made within the stated timeframes. Pay-As-You-Go Sessions For those wishing to attend individual sessions, a fee of £40 per session applies. These sessions must be paid for in advance. To ensure availability of resources and adequate preparation, please notify us by the Monday of the week you wish to attend. Booking is subject to availability, and confirmation must be made via email each week. Please note that priority will be given to attendees who have enrolled on the full course, as this supports consistent planning and delivery for the group as a whole. We will always do our best to accommodate pay-as-you-go requests where space and resources allow. Cancelled Sessions If a session is cancelled due to circumstances beyond our control (e.g., illness, extreme weather, transport disruption) and a replacement session is offered, no refund will be issued. If a replacement session cannot be arranged, a refund will be processed at the end of the term. If a class does not meet the minimum enrolment required to cover costs, we may offer to reduce the number of weeks without reducing the fee or alternatively adjust the fee to allow the class to proceed. Refund Policy - If the course is cancelled before it begins, a full refund will be issued. - Refunds are typically processed immediately, though in exceptional cases may take up to 28 days. - If you withdraw from a course once it has started, you will not be eligible for a refund. We reserve the right to make reasonable changes to course tutors, timings, content, or venue (within a reasonable distance of the original location). No refunds will be given in these instances. Attendance Unless you are informed otherwise, please assume that your course will go ahead as scheduled. We advise all attendees to join our WhatsApp group for the most immediate updates regarding class schedules or changes. If WhatsApp is not suitable, please ensure you check your emails in good time before setting off for your session to avoid unnecessary travel in the event of any last-minute updates. Course Content While we aim to deliver all courses as described, there may be occasions where changes to content, materials, or media are necessary. These adaptations will not impact the overall quality or enjoyment of the course. Suitable alternatives will always be provided.
